Overview

Nestled in the heart of Sentul Pasar, Kuala Lumpur, Ayam Penyet Sambal Ulek offers a solid destination for lovers of traditional Indonesian-Malay flavors. The restaurant specializes in its namesake dish, Ayam Penyet, which is a smashed, fried chicken served with an array of sambal chilies that bring a fiery yet balanced depth to the palate. This spot is ideal for diners seeking an authentic and satisfying meal close to home or work.

The menu showcases a variety of main dishes, including the signature Ayam Penyet Sambal Ulek, which pairs perfectly with their housemade chili pastes. Diners can choose from different protein options like ayam (chicken), ikan keli (catfish), and daging gepuk (slow-cooked beef), each prepared to retain moistness on the inside while embracing a crispy, flavorful exterior. Notably, the sambals—ranging from the mild Sambal Balado to the more intense Sambal Terasi Penyet—allow customization that appeals to both spice novices and aficionados.

Complementing the mains are classic side dishes such as the refreshing Cah Kangkung and Cah Kailan Kampung. These stir-fried leafy greens provide a vibrant contrast to the bold, spiced proteins. The restaurant also offers a variety of soups, like Sup Daging Mihun and Soto Ayam, evoking nostalgic home-style flavors that deepen the overall dining experience.

Walk-in diners often find the outlet bustling during peak hours, a testament to its growing local popularity. While some patrons have noted occasional delays in service and mix-ups with orders, the quality of food remains largely consistent and well-received. Staff attentiveness could benefit from refinement, but the overall experience is enhanced by the welcoming ambiance and efficient kitchen turnaround.

The space and atmosphere cater well to a broad audience: from working professionals grabbing a quick, flavorful lunch to families enjoying a casual dinner. Its location on Jln Sentul Pasar provides easy access, making it a convenient spot for authentic ayam penyet cravings without the need to venture far.

Customer testimonials echo the quality of the food and the value offered. Reviews highlight the generous portions, flavorful and juicy proteins, and the freedom to select preferred chicken cuts—a feature that adds a personalized touch uncommon in many similar establishments.

In summary, Ayam Penyet Sambal Ulek stands out for bringing robust Indonesian-Malay flavors to Kuala Lumpur’s dynamic culinary scene. It’s a dependable choice for those craving traditional ayam penyet with an excellent range of sambal options and well-executed accompaniments.

Was looking for a place to eat ayam penyet and found this place. Food was generous portion. We ordered fish, the bakar and the fried one. Both were nicely done! Crispy and flavourful, still juicy inside. The chilli on the side really elevates the dishes. Love that you can choose which chilli to go with. Price is reasonable. Will definitely be back for more!

Went there with no expectation as I only around the corner for work. My order came a bit late, maybe due to peak hour (as I noticed it’s almost full house along with multiple orders from Panda/Grab). Surprisingly, they taste superb! The soup tastes like soto, how I used to eat in Makassar. Sambal balado is not spicy at all, suitable for beginner. And their tempe + tauhu is not paper thin slice, unlike some other Ayam Penyet eateries. Also love on how I can choose the desirable chicken part from the menu. Definitely will come back

Second visit here. Food was good (maintain as per first visit) but customer experience was the opposite. Slow to take order despite me walking to the counter asking for the waiter. And when the waiter (red hair) finally took the order, the item that arrived was not as ordered. Need to recall the waiter to fix the order. Note to owner: To ensure staff is more aware. Understand its hard to achieve great service level. But frequent training and reminder would do. Could have gotten a 5 star but the UX took the other star away

Ayam Penyet Sambal Ulek is a must-try, earning a perfect 5 stars! The restaurant is clean and tidy with a nice decor, creating a pleasant dining atmosphere. Service is top-notch; the servers are quick, attentive, and kind, ensuring a great experience from start to finish. The food is simply delicious. The ayam penyet is perfectly crispy yet juicy, while the keli penyet is also crispy and free of any fishy taste. The ayam bakar and empal penyet are tender and well-seasoned. Their signature sambal is a true highlight, balancing spiciness, saltiness, and sweetness beautifully. The soup completes the meal, and the Mee Ayam is incredibly authentic, tasting just like Indonesia. Portions are generous, leaving you truly full, all at a reasonable price. Despite quick preparation, freshness is always guaranteed. Plus, paid parking is conveniently available right outside. Overall, Ayam Penyet Sambal Ulek is highly recommended. I'll definitely be back for more of these fantastic Indonesian flavors.
